Guarantees of Origin (GOs) are an official confirmation that a specified amount of electricity has been generated from renewable energy sources.

The system enables consumers to support renewable electricity production by purchasing a “clean energy certificate,” regardless of the physical source of the electricity they consume.

Most countries worldwide participate in similar certification schemes: RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates) in North America, I-REC/TIGR in South America, Russia, China, and India, and GOs in the European Union. The EU introduced the Guarantee of Origin system in 2001 to stimulate renewable energy generation and reduce climate impacts.

Through precise registration, each unit of renewable energy can only be sold once, ensuring trust and transparency in the market. This provides financial incentives for renewable energy producers and strengthens the role of clean energy in the marketplace.
