Guarantees of Origin (GOs) are key to ensuring that electricity is genuinely renewable. They enable consumers and companies to make informed choices to support the production of clean energy and to reduce their carbon footprint. The system, built on transparency and reliability, increases market confidence and encourages further investment in environmentally friendly energy production.
Landsnet’s Role in Issuing Guarantees of Origin
Landsnet hf., the Transmission System Operator in Iceland, is responsible for issuing Guarantees of Origin.
These certificates show how much renewable electricity has been produced and sold in Iceland. However, Landsnet does not monitor how GOs are traded on the market or how they are used.
Tengiliðir
Landsnet has an overview of GO sales but cannot determine whether certificates are sold directly on the market or used to fulfill contractual agreements. The company can, however, trace after the fact where certificates have been transferred, though not the prices at which they were sold.
Landsnet ensures that electricity carrying a Guarantee of Origin is generated from renewable energy sources, or through combined heat and power (CHP), in line with criteria set by the National Energy Authority (Orkustofnun), under Act no. 30/2008.
